The Book Cover Preview

The book cover is designed, and the entire book thing suddenly feels a whole load more real. It will be on sale in about 8 - 10 weeks, with the first advance copies in my hand in about 4 week's time. Many thanks to the photographers, Richard Bloomfield who took the shot of Toby in 1996, and Rachel Raphael who took the other two gorgeous photos. The impression we've tried to create is to show that, against all the odds, Toby made it all the way through childhood. Even though it was sticky, he was and still is happy. The shot of him covering my face is to demonstrate that he can now do some of it without me, and that's how it should be. Independence is what every parent wants for their children, even if Toby, with all his difficulties, is developing a different version of independence.

Francesca and Adam, whilst very happy to be included in the book itself, were absolutely adamant that they were not going to have their photos on the cover! It's such a shame, because they are both every bit as gorgeous looking as their brother, Toby! Hey ho, never mind! Maybe the next one, eh?!

    1. Thank you Marie, I knew you'd love to see it! You've been there on the sidelines cheering me on every since I started this crazy project and I can't begin to tell you how much that means to me.... And yes, I'm excited too if a little wobbly every now and again, but I suppose that's normal! xxxx

  5. oh, Yvonne - you've done it and it IS real! I am so thrilled for you. and I love the photos of you and toby and the meaning behind the one where he's covering your face - so touching (oops, unintended but fun pun!). the title, "Special Parents..._-what a tribute to all of them who will read, and learn, and be comforted and inspired, and finally know they are not alone.

    much love and congratulations,

    Karen XOXO

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Karen. The real reason Toby is covering my face is that he's the kiss-blowing champion of the Universe, and he doesn't just blow his own kisses, he blows everyone else's too! So that's what he's really doing, but I thought it really fitted the cover with another meaning! I do so hope someone gets something out of the book, and I think you've hit the nail on the head - having a seriously ill or profoundly disabled child is very isolating, and you can feel terribly alone. If just one parent reads this book and feels less alone because of it, then I'll be really happy. Until it's actually published and I know what people really think, though, it's all feeling a bit wobbly, but I think in a good way! Take care and thank you again, Yvonne xxx

    1. Thank you Catherine. I'm so pleased with it I still can't stop smiling! Even more excitement this evening when I've been able to see the entire book typeset as it will appear in the book itself - it really is now feeling very real indeed! I'm so grateful for your lovely encouragement, thank you. Yvonne xx

  8. Thank you Nancy, it really is an exciting time at the moment, but a little bit daunting as well. I will be so happy if even one person's life seems a bit more bearable because of something they've found in the book. How are things with you at the moment? I hope you're having a great week. Take care love Yvonne xx
